There is sufficient fictional allusion representing that the Sumida River was once abode to real fireflies, which were supposed to assemble around sparkling, running water. Searching for these glowing creatures on the banks was a trendy activity in Tokyo (Edo, at the time) during the 18th century. For gloomy and observable cause, fireflies no longer dwell in the area. The Tokyo Hotaru festival is part of the city’s “Sumida River Renaissance” project. The “wishing stars” are prepared with Panasonic’s LED chips, rechargeable batteries and solar cells. Through these solar cells and rechargeable batteries, the “wishing stars” can produce and stock up entire the energy they require for separately, significance that no energy was used in lighting them, reducing the impact of the event on the environment. After the event, all the “wishing stars” were collected to be reused again in the future.
